'Twylight' Named 2012 Cow of the Year

Officials at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture have announced the 2012 Cow of the Year. 'Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight,' an aged Brown Swiss owned by Tom and Joan Oberhaus and family of Cozy Nook Farm in Waukesha, has been selected as this year's recipient for her excellent pedigree, production
record and outstanding showing performance.
Classified EX-92 2E, Twylight produced 35,790 pounds of milk, 1,140 pounds protein and 1,514 pounds of fat in 365 days at six years of age. Her record was even higher at age four when she produced 39,682 pounds of milk, 1,303 pounds of protein and 1,569 pounds of fat. Her lifetime production record is
over of 191,000 pounds of milk.
Twylight's first two daughters both scored Excellent at their first opportunity and have outstanding production, reproduction and transmitting ability. On the most current sire summary, among the top 30 sires in the breed, eight of them are Twylight sons or grandsons.
"I am pleased to announce Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight as the 2012 Wisconsin Cow of the Year and an outstanding representative of excellence in production and genetics," said State Agriculture Secretary Ben Brancel. "Congratulations to Tom and Joan Oberhaus for this recognition of their commitment to the
quality of the Brown Swiss breed and the success of Wisconsin's dairy industry."
She will be recognized at a proclamation ceremony next month during the International Brown Swiss Show at World Dairy Expo in Madison.
The Brown Swiss breed was selected to receive the Cow of the Year award according to a succession plan among the major dairy breeds, as determined by the Wisconsin Purebred Dairy Cattle Association.
