Showers Return to Wreak Havoc with Harvest Progress
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/25/2018

Though the temperatures warmed up a bit, scattered showers prevented many farmers from getting much done in the fields last week. According to the latest crop/weather report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, rainstorms midweek brought more heavy precipitation to the state, with up to five inches of rain measured in some areas. Muddy field conditions slowed harvest activities in areas that were already saturated. And plant diseases and flood damage were also discovered in many fields.

Topsoil moisture levels were rated at three percent short, 78 percent adequate and 19 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, all but nine percent of the corn was dented--which was a whopping 10 days ahead of normal. With over half the crop now rated as mature, farmers were able to harvest 60 percent of their corn for silage and four percent for grain.

Ninety percent of the soybean leaves have turned color, nearly a week better than average. Another 64 percent were reported dropping leaves. Farmers have already harvested five percent of the beans so far.

In the Central Sands region, over half of the potato harvest has been completed. And nearly a third of the winter wheat was planted.

The fourth cutting of alfalfa was 77 percent complete. That's five days behind last year, but four days ahead of the average.

Reporters also noted that fall tillage was three percent complete.
