Door County Manure Spill Said to be Contained
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/18/2014

State natural resource officials say area ground and surface waters do not appear to be contaminated after nearly 650,000 gallons of manure was spilled on a farm in Door County. The DNR said the incident, which may have been the largest spill in Wisconsin in the past nine years, occurred early Tuesday morning at DeGrave Farms in the town of Brussels.

The mishap was caused when an above-ground storage tank began to leak causing much of the waste to enter a ditch and flow into nearby Spring Creek. Contractors were able to construct make-shift berms to contain the manure so that it didn't reach any major bodies of water.

DNR crews says it was fortune that the spill did not occur while it was raining.

Reports say the farm's owner will be responsible for covering the cost of the clean-up efforts and may face a fine for the accident.
