USDA Report Shows State Winter Wheat, Oat Production Up

New figures released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that winter wheat production in Wisconsin is estimated at 16.3 million bushels this year, up six percent from 2013. The agency's Small Grains 2014 Summary indicated that 295,000 acres of the crop was planted this year. That's down six percent from last year. Winter wheat harvested area, at 250,000 acres, is also down six percent from 2013. But yields are up seven percent at 65 bushels per acre.

Oat production in the Badger State is estimated at 8.68 million bushels, up 27 percent from last year's record low. Area seeded to oats totaled 255,000 acres, and harvested area was at 140,000 acres. The last four years have seen the lowest planted and harvested acreage totals on record. Oat yield, at 62 bushels per acre, is down three bushels from last year.

And barley production is estimated at 752 thousand bushels, down four percent from last year and the third lowest on record. Planted acreage, at 26,000 is the lowest in more than 30 years. Barley harvested area at 16,000 acres is unchanged from last year. Yields for the crop are at 47 bushels per acre, down two bushels from last year.
