Weather Turns Wet & Cold in Midst of Harvest Season
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/17/2017

Though daytime temperatures were above normal for most of the past week, some areas of Wisconsin experienced frost overnight and rainy weather during the weekend. According to the latest crop report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, this made corn and soybean harvesting difficult, while causing crop moisture levels to increase.

The topsoil was rated one percent very short, nine percent short, 81 percent adequate and nine percent surplus.

As of Sunday, reports say 96 percent of Wisconsin's corn has reached the dented stage or beyond. However, maturity was still more than a week behind average for this time of the year. Right now, about nine percent of the corn for grain is off the fields, with 80 percent of the silage harvest now complete.

Nearly all of the soybeans have turned color and all by eight percent have dropped leaves. The bean harvest is reported at 44 percent complete, equal to last year, but four days behind the average.

Seventy-seven percent of the state's winter wheat acres were planted, and just over half has already emerged.

About a fifth of all the fall tillage is now wrapped up-- slightly behind last year, and five days behind the average.
