State Onion Production to be Less Than Last Year

Wisconsin's 2014 summer storage onion production is expected to be 756,000 hundredweight. The USDA says the number of acres harvested is unchanged from last year at 1,800 acres.

However, the crop's yield is predicted to be 420 cwt. per acre, down seven percent from last year.

Nationally, U.S. onion growers are expecting to harvest 97,100 acres of summer storage onions in 2014, up one percent from last year. Yield, at 587 cwt. per acre, is forecast to be up 11 percent from 2013.

Total production is predicted to increase 12 percent to 57.0 million cwt.
