UW-Madison to Hold School for Beginning Market Growers

The Wisconsin School for Beginning Market Growers, a three-day workshop for anyone wanting to start a fresh market vegetable farm, will be offered early next year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The program will be held January 11-13 for beginning farmers who want to grow and market fresh produce.

"Whether you are interested in starting your own farm or working as a farm manager, this program will help you make smart business decisions about production, marketing, pricing, capitalization and labor," says John Hendrickson, the school's coordinator and outreach specialist with the UW-Madison Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems. "Our course is taught by a team of experienced growers who provide a wealth of practical knowledge and insight into what it takes to operate a farm business, and avoid costly mistakes."

The program emphasizes organic production methods and direct marketing. Participants will learn about fertility management, greenhouse use, season extension, pest management, equipment needs, planning and budgeting. Instructors include both experienced growers and UW faculty and staff.

Now in its 21st year, the School for Beginning Market Growers is sponsored by the UW-Madison Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems.

Meanwhile, there are a limited number of $100 scholarships available to support participants interested in starting an organic farm.
