Lawmakers Decide to Place Christmas Tree in State Capitol
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/04/2020

A pair of Republican Assemblymen aren't taking no for an answer when it comes to the idea of putting a Christmas tree in the Wisconsin State Capitol this holiday season. Reps. Paul Tittl of Manitowoc and Shae Sortwell from Two Rivers brought a small pine into the rotunda this week, despite Gov. Tony Evers' recent announcement that a tree should not be erected in the building this year.

"When Governor Evers decided there wasn't going to be a 'holiday tree,' or as mostcallita Christmas tree, in the Capitol rotunda, Rep. Sortwell and I thought that was a shame," Tittl said. "There has been a Christmas tree in the rotunda of our Capitol dating back a hundred years. Christmas is a most important time of the year for many of us. Hundreds of staffers in the Capitol love Christmas, and we wanted to put up a tree for them to enjoy."

The lawmakers said they didn't bring the tree in to be divisive, but rather to share something everyone can look forward to seeing and have a sense of hope.

They also invited children throughout their districts and around the state to make their own ornaments and send them in to be placed on the tree.

Anyone interested in sending decorations should mail them to: Room 219 North State Capitol PO Box 8953 Madison, WI 53708
