Thanksgiving Meal in Wisconsin to Cost About $45.01
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/16/2018

Your Thanksgiving meal will likely cost less to prepare next week when compared to the previous year's holiday. According to the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, a traditional holiday meal for a family of ten will cost around $45.01--which is down $2.25 from last year's average. The annual pricing survey is now at its lowest level since 2009.

The Madison-based farm group conducted its survey of 12 food items of the traditional Thanksgiving meal in 27 communities across Wisconsin. WFBF Spokesperson Sarah Hetke says the report's findings show that a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal is not only very affordable, but will probably cost less than $5 per person.

"This year's classic Marketbasket survey rang in more than $2.00 less than last year at this time," Hetke said. "The survey's total price, when divided by 10 people, shows a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal can cost approximately $4.50 per person."

The average price for a 16-pound turkey in Wisconsin supermarkets was slightly cheaper than last year at $19.04. Other year-to-year savings were found in the costs of a gallon of milk, fresh cranberries, pumpkin pie mix, sweet potatoes and green peas. However, shoppers will pay a bit more for cream, rolls, relish tray, pie mix, cub stuffing and miscellaneous ingredients.

Meanwhile, the American Farm Bureau also released its survey of the same 12 items for a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal at $47.91. That was $1.21 below the 2017 survey, and also averages less than $5 per person.

Wisconsin communities that took part in the survey include Appleton, Ashland, Belleville, Beloit, Chilton, De Pere, Dodgeville, Eau Claire, Elkhorn, Elroy, Kewaunee, Lake Geneva, Manawa, Marshfield, Mequon, New Glarus, Pewaukee, Platteville, Plover, Richland Center, Shawano, Sparta, Viroqua, Waterford, Watertown, West Bend and West Salem.
