Other Prices Received by Farmers Fell Last Month

Prices in Wisconsin for beef cows and cull dairy cows sold for slaughter, steers and heifers, corn, and soybeans are expected to decrease from September to October. But according to the state's agriculture
department, milk, oats, potatoes, alfalfa hay, and other hay are expected to increase during the same period. The price for calves is ex-pected to stay at about the same level as September.
As of mid-October, the average price Wisconsin farmers re-ceived for corn was $3.58 per bushel, one cent below the aver-age price in September, and 40 cents below October 2008. Na-tionwide, corn
prices averaged $3.54 per bushel in mid-October, down 83 cents from October of last year.
Wisconsin soybeans decreased 37 cents per bushel from Sep-tember, for an average of $9.50 per bushel in mid-October. This is a 38 cent per bushel decrease from October of last year. U.S. soybeans sold
for $9.74 per bushel in mid-October, down 21 cents from October 2008.
Oat prices in Wisconsin averaged $1.86 per bushel in mid-October, a 9 cent increase from September. Nationally, oat prices were $1.80 per bushel, $1.46 below October 2008.
As of mid-October, alfalfa hay in Wisconsin sold for an average price of $100.00 per ton, up $5.00 from September. The aver-age price for other hay types also increased $5.00 from Septem-ber, to
$70.00 per ton in mid-October.
Wisconsin steer and heifer prices averaged $75.30 per hundred-weight (cwt.) in mid-October, $1.20 below September. Prices for beef cows and cull dairy cows sold for slaughter decreased 80 cents per
cwt. from September to $42.30 in mid-October. Calf prices in mid-October were $124.00 per cwt., the same as in September.
At the U.S. level, steer and heifer prices in mid-October were $8.90 per cwt. below a year ago, at $84.00. Prices for beef cows and cull dairy cows sold for slaughter, at an average of $43.70 per cwt., were
down $4.70 from October of last year. Calf prices fell $3.00 per cwt. from October 2008 to $103.00.
Wheat, barley, and hog monthly prices are not published sepa-rately for Wisconsin, but nationally, all wheat sold for $4.56 per bushel in mid-October, a $2.09 decrease from October 2008. U.S. winter
wheat prices decreased $1.68 from October of last year, averaging $4.35 per bushel. Nationwide, barley sold for $3.94 per bushel, $1.79 below October 2008. Hog prices aver-aged $37.20 per cwt.,
down $11.30 from a year ago.
