Crop Report: Last Week's Cold Temps Kept Grain Moisture High

It was another cold week in Wisconsin farm fields, with the northern half of the state getting even more snow over the weekend. According to the latest crop report from the state's agriculture department, overnight lows were in the low teens and single digits. And even though precipitation was light, overcast skies and cold weather kept grain moisture high.

Many farmers were able to get into the fields to spread manure and till ground, but only in areas that were not too soft for heavy equipment.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated seven percent short, 85 percent adequate and eight percent surplus.

As of Sunday, about 56 percent of the corn for grain was harvested. That's still 11 days behind the average. The moisture content of corn harvested for grain averaged 21 percent.

Soybeans were all but eight percent off the fields, a week behind last year's progress.

Fall tillage was reported at just over half complete, about a week slower than usual for this time of year.
