State Cheese Production Fell During October

After seeing its second increase of the year during September, Wisconsin's total cheese production went back down in October when compared to the same month during 2018. The latest dairy product summary from the USDA notes that state dairy plants made 285.3 million pounds of cheese during the month, which was 7.5 percent less than a year earlier, but 1.1 percent higher than this past September (which had less days on the calendar).

Nationally, about 1.13 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States in October. That was 2.1 percent lower than 2018, but 4.6 percent more than the previous month's production totals.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese decreased as the state produced 83.2 million pounds, about 7.4 percent less than last year, but 6.9 percent above last month's production. Cheddar output fell 6.8 percent compared to 2018 to total 56.8 million pounds, but rose 6.6 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese production was at 141.5 million pounds, about 7.7 percent below last year, and 0.6 percent lower for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 91.7 million pounds--about 9.0 percent less than October 2018, and 0.5 percent lower than September 2019.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 23.7 million pounds, which was up 2.9 percent from last year, but 2.4 percent less compared to last month.
