UW-RF Earns Top Awards at National Ag Education Conference

Members from University of Wisconsin-River Falls' Alpha Tau Alpha took first place in the debate competition and earned other awards at the National Collegiate Agricultural Education Conference last month. The event was held in conjunction with the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY.

Debate team members included Maureen Croak, Eagle River; Tanner Johnson, Bangor; Zachary Markhardt, Black River Falls; and Nathan Overby, Amery.

The students also placed second in Parliamentary Procedure that included teams from Pennsylvania State University, the University of Minnesota, and Auburn University, among others. Team members included Connor Anderson, Clear Lake; Kathryn Chapman, Endeavor; Isaac Christenson, Amery; Shawna Henke, Deer Park; and Samuel Tauchen, Bonduel. In addition, Chapman won the Top Chairperson Award.

UWRF placed first in the Program of Excellence in the Community Service category. Jennifer Elsenpeter of Marine on St. Croix, Minn. gave the presentation. The Program of Excellence is a way for collegiate agricultural education organizations to share the activities they have conducted in the following categories: professional development, fundraising, community service, and fellowship. In the community service category, Elsenpeter highlighted three of their seven activities: Chisago County Children's Water Festival, Feed My Starving Children and Relay for Life.

And for the 10th consecutive year, UWRF received Platinum Level recognition with the A.W. Nolan Memorial Leadership Award. Organizations are awarded points for national publications, participation in competitions, and leadership activities. This award recognizes organizations for their pursuit of national leadership and professional development opportunities for their members.
