Wisconsin, U.S. Cheese Production Climbed in October

Dairy plants in the Badger State are still producing more cheese products than they did a year ago. The latest dairy product summary from the USDA notes that the state churned out 290.1 million pounds of cheese in October, which was up 1.1 percent from a year earlier, and 4.1 percent more than this past September (which had less days on the calendar).

Nationally, about 1.12 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States. That was 3.0 percent more than the same month last year, and 6.1 percent above the previous month's production totals.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese increased as the state produced 84 million pounds, about 0.2 percent more than last year, and 7.0 percent above last month's production. Cheddar output fell 0.1 percent compared to 2017 to total 57.5 million pounds, but rose 9.4 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese was at 145.6 million pounds, about 0.6 percent above last year, and 1.9 percent higher for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 96 million pounds--about 1.7 percent more than October 2017, and up 1.4 percent compared to September 2018.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 24.5 million pounds, which was down 8.0 percent from last year, but 1.4 percent more compared to last month.
