Less Deer Harvested During 2015 Gun Season
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/01/2015

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has released its preliminary harvest estimates from the recent nine-day gun-deer season, which wrapped up on Sunday. A survey of deer registration stations across the state shows an estimated 192,327 deer were bagged during the annual hunt. That's down from 199,500 killed in 2014.

DNR officials say the final harvest numbers are expected to be released in late winter. The total does not include harvest information from the archery, October antlerless gun deer hunt, muzzleloader, December antlerless deer gun hunt or late archery seasons.

State Conservation Warden Scott Thiede the weather conditions were favorable this year and participation was strong. The DNR sold over 612,000 gun deer licenses this season, compared to 608,700 last year.

However, the season was not as safe compared to other years. This year, three hunters were killed statewide in gun related accidents.

Meanwhile, the DNR says there are still other opportunities to hunt deer this year. The muzzleloader hunt is already underway for hunters holding unused gun buck and antlerless deer tags. There is also a statewide antlerless deer hunt December 10-13.
