WFU Ready to Unveil Results of Dairy Producer Survey
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/01/2016

The Wisconsin Farmers Union will soon release the findings from its 2016 Wisconsin Dairy Producer Survey. The group announced it will hold a press conference on Monday to go over the results of the questionnaire, which was sent to every dairy farm in the state this summer in hopes of learning what the industry has to share about improving low milk prices.

Survey coordinators say farmers feel the prices they received for their milk during the past two years are below the cost of production. One responded noted that producers have been forced to borrow money to pay for losses, which then becomes difficult to repay when prices go back up because that money is needed for repairs or equipment upgrades.

WFU President Darin Von Ruden says the survey is the first of its kind to ask farmers directly about potential solutions for improving milk prices.

"It's great to see dairy farmers across the state going out of their way to share their thoughts and experiences on these serious issues facing our dairy industry," Von Ruden said. "The responses are very important to our organization, and we hope this survey will help the industry move forward."

Feedback was received on a variety of topics, such as the volatility of milk prices, the impact of farm management, the Margin Protection Program, and the Trans-Pacific Trade Agreement.

Over 1,000 completed forms were sent back to the WFU during the survey period, which was held between August and October.
