Final Chance to Apply for WPA College Scholarships

Students with a sincere interest in the swine industry are being encouraged to apply for three scholarships being offered by the Wisconsin Pork Association. Organizers say the scholarships are available to high school seniors and college students.

The WPA scholarship is open to high school seniors. Five finalists will be selected to compete for the $500 scholarship, with each finalist receiving $250 for their participation. An interviewing committee will select finalists.

The Whitmore Memorial Scholarship was established as a legacy to the late Rex Whitmore, a master statesman and communicator who served as the first executive director of the Wisconsin Pork Producers Association. Applicants must be a registered junior or senior at one of the following University of Wisconsin campuses: Madison, Platteville, or River Falls. This is a $500 scholarship, and priority will be given to applicants pursuing an Animal Science or closely related major.

Meanwhile, the pork check-off group, in cooperation with the family of Buell Gunderson, has established a scholarship program to recognize the many contributions that Buell Gunderson made to the Wisconsin pork industry. The WPA will accept recommendations or applications from county pork producer organizations, industry members, pork producers, and colleges or technical schools for recipients of the Gunderson Memorial Scholarship on an annual basis. Individuals who have shown considerable dedication and involvement in the pork industry will be considered for the scholarship. A committee will review applications to determine whether a $500 award will be presented annually.

The deadline to apply for the various state pork scholarships is December 1.
