Grow your Ag future with WI youth council
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 02/20/2024

Calling all high school juniors with a passion for agriculture! The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is seeking enthusiastic students to join the Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council. This one-year program immerses young minds in the exciting world of agriculture, fostering engagement with state government and DATCP's initiatives.

"Being on the council has been amazing," says Sam Mell, a current member. "I've discovered new career paths in agriculture and connected with peers who share my passion."

The council's mission is multifaceted: highlighting agricultural careers, sharing resources for farmers, contributing to policy development, and fostering valuable networking opportunities. Members participate in monthly virtual sessions featuring industry experts, discussions, and insightful presentations.

"The council deepened my interest in agriculture policy and diverse career options," shares Emily Sydow, another member. "It's opened doors, provided connections, and broadened my knowledge base."

DATCP seeks 15 diverse members, with at least one representing each of the nine council districts. Remaining seats are filled by at-large members. Find district maps and details at AgYouthCouncil.wi.gov.

"Joining the council honed my leadership skills and impacted my daily life through the insights I gained," says Layten Sobieski, a council member.

To apply, complete an application form with an essay outlining your agricultural involvement and how the council aligns with your future plans. A one-minute video is also required.

"This program helped me explore diverse career paths," concludes Tyson Gehrke, a member. "It's been incredibly valuable, and I highly recommend it to anyone considering a career in agriculture."

Applications are open until March 31, 2024. Don't miss this chance to shape your future and advocate for Wisconsin's vibrant agricultural industry!
