Top Winter Wheat, Oat Producing Counties of 2018 Determined

New estimates from the USDA give us an indication of what counties produced the most winter wheat and oat crops during the past growing season. The agency says Manitowoc County was once again the largest winter wheat producing county in Wisconsin in 2018 with about 1.1 million bushels. Fond du Lac and Dodge Counties were second and third; with east central Wisconsin being the largest wheat producing district.

Kenosha County was the highest yielding county at 85.3 bushels per acre. Rock and Ozaukee Counties had the next two highest yields at 80.9 and 80.3 bushels, respectively. Juneau County had the lowest yield at 37.8 bushels per acre.

Vernon County had the greatest increase in yield with a 23 bushels per acre jump from the previous growing season. Juneau was the county with the largest drop in yield after falling 28.7 bushels per acre.

In 2018, Langlade County was the largest oat-producing county with 774,000 bushels. Vernon County was second with 267,000 bushels harvested.

Langlade County had the highest yield in the state with 83.1 bushels per acre, followed by Sheboygan County with 77.6 and Walworth County at 74.7 bushels per acre. Lincoln and Manitowoc Counties also recorded average yields over 70.0 bushels per acre with 71.3 and 71.2, respectively.
