Marklein to Chair Wisconsin Senate Ag Committee
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/18/2018
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has announced his picks for various committee leadership positions for the next legislative session, which includes Sen. Howard Marklein as chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Revenue and Financial
Institutions. The Spring Green Republican served on the Assembly Ag Committee from 2011 to 2015 until he defeated former State Sen. Dale Schultz for his seat in a Republican primary election.
Marklein was a co-author of the Implements of Husbandry law and was among the leading voices of those encouraging Wisconsin's congressional delegation to find a way to revise the state's phosphorus standards in 2017.
"I am honored to be trusted with the leadership of this important committee," Marklein said. "I requested to be included on the Agriculture committee this session so that I can better represent the farmers in the communities I serve. This committee assignment
speaks to all of my strengths and areas of expertise."
He will assume responsibilities of the committee's leadership on January 7. Marklein replaces Sen. Terry Moulton from Chippewa Falls, who did not seek re-election.
Meanwhile, Fitzgerald also chose Sen-Elect Kathy Bernier as chair of the committee on rural issues and Sen. Rob Cowles as head of the committee on natural resources & energy.
The vice chairs and other Republican members of the committees will be named later this month.
