Judge Rules to Re-List Midwest Wolves as 'Endangered'
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 12/22/2014

The legal pendulum on whether gray wolves should be protected as an endangered species has swung the other way once again. On Friday, Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service should not have removed federal protections for wolves in Wisconsin and eight other Great Lakes states in 2012. That decision, which led to several wolf hunting seasons in many of those states, has been contested by animal rights groups for over two years.

Judge Howell says wolves should immediately be placed under the protections, which were first established in the late-1970s. The move places wolves in Minnesota on the 'threatened' status, while Wisconsin and Michigan wolves are now classified as 'endangered' based on population formulas.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin wildlife officials say they're disappointed by the judge's ruling. DNR Spokesman Bill Cosh said Friday that the decision means it is now illegal for anyone to kill a wolf under any circumstance--even if they are attacking farm or domestic animals.

Reports say that the agency is expected to appeal the latest ruling.
