State Pork Producers Honored During Annual Meeting

The Wisconsin Pork Association has bestowed its top awards and scholarships to its members during the group's annual meeting on Thursday. Held in conjunction with the Corn/Soy Expo in Wisconsin Dells, the WPA presented its Distinguished Service Award to Gary Onan, an animal and foods professor with the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. This year's Distinguished Service Industry Honoree Award went to long-time WPA board member Tom Knauer of Avalon.
Zen Miller, a dairy and livestock agent with the University of Wisconsin-Extension program in Outagamie County, was presented with the Agri-Communicator award.
Delegates at the meeting also re-elected Jonathan Wyttenback to another three-year term on the WPA board, and chose Ray Ibeling and Nathan Brickl as new board members.
Meanwhile, a $500 Whitmore Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Kurt Weisensel of Edgerton, who's attending the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Mikayla Wehrle from New London, attending at the UW-River Falls; and Morgan McCue, Edgerton,
studying at UW-Madison, were each awarded a $250 scholarship for being finalists for the award.
The WPA's annual $500 scholarship winner was Jacob Krebs, a senor at Rio High School who plans to attend South Dakota State University in the fall. Other finalists receiving $250 scholarships include Jim Buttles, Wilson; Amber Patterson, Bloomington; Ellie
Ries, Lomira; and Caitlyn Wileman, Janesville.
Mikayla Wehrle was also the 2016 Gunderson Memorial Scholarship recipient.
