Total WI Farm Numbers Went Down in '16, Acreage Unchanged

The total number of farms in America's Dairyland during 2016 was 68,700, according to new USDA figures. That's down 200 operations from the year earlier.

As in recent years, the farms with $500,000 to $999,999 sales, as well as those with over a million dollars showed an increase of 50 farms from 2015.

Total land in farms in Wisconsin was 14.4 million acres, unchanged from a year earlier. Farms in the $100,000 to $249,000 sales class had a collective total of 50,000 more acres last year.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin's average farm size in 2016 was 210 acres, up just one acre from 2015. The average farm size for those in the $1,000,000 and over economic sales class was 1,479 acres, a decrease of 32 acres since 2015.

The number of farms in the United States for 2016 is estimated at 2.06 million, down 8,000 farms from 2015. Total land in farms, at 911 million acres, about a million acres less than 2015. The average farm size for 2016 is 442 acres, up one acre from the previous year.
