Farm-Paid Milk Prices Drops to $18.40 Cwt. for January

Wisconsin farmers received an average price of $18.40 per hundredweight for their milk in January 2015, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was down $2.40 per cwt. from December and is the fourth consecutive month to month drop in price--falling $8.20 since September of last year.

The U.S. milk price for January was $17.60 per cwt, 80 cents lower than Wisconsin's price and $2.80 below the December U.S. price. All of the 23 major milk producing states had a decrease in price from December to January, with California reporting the smallest decrease of $1.90 to $15.81 per cwt.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange 40-pound block cheese price closed at $1.54 per pound on February 27, while barrels were $1.49 per pound. The CME butter price was $1.69 per pound.

For the week ending February 21, the Agricultural Marketing Service U.S. weekly 40-pound block cheese price averaged $1.53 per pound, and 500 pound barrels adjusted to 38 percent moisture averaged $1.52 per pound. The U.S. butter price was $1.71 per pound.
