Dane County Tops State in Corn Production, Rock Co. in Soybeans

Dane County was once again the largest corn producer in Wisconsin during the past growing season. That's according to the latest figures from the USDA, which reports farmers in the area ran 30.2 million bushels through their combines in 2018. The agency says Grant, Rock, Dodge and Lafayette counties rounded out the top five for corn production last year.

Grant County had the highest corn yield in the state at 202.7 bushels per acre. Other leading counties were Lafayette, with 197.3 bushels; Walworth, 194.1 bushels, Dodge, 191.6 bushels; and Iowa, 190.4 bushels. Wisconsin corn growers overall produced 545 million bushels in 2018, with 11 counties exceeded the 180 bushel per acre yield mark.

Meanwhile, growers produced 13.4 million tons of corn silage, down 20 percent from the year earlier. Fond du Lac County chopped the most silage with 1.11 million tons produced, followed by Manitowoc, Brown, Kewaunee and Marathon Counties. Polk County had the highest average yield, at 24.0 tons per acre.

And Rock, Grant, Dane and Dodge were the four largest soybean-producing counties in Wisconsin, with Rock producing 5.23 million bushels. Thirteen counties averaged over 50 bushels per acre, led by Grant County, where soybeans averaged 64.6 bushels per acre. Sawyer County recorded the lowest yield in the state at 31.1 bushels per acre.

The state's total soybean production was 105 million bushels in 2018. The average state yield was 49 bushels per acre, about two bushels more than the previous year.
