Building Commission Takes No Action on Alliant Energy Expansion
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/25/2019

With the state building commission rejecting all of Gov. Tony Evers' proposed capital budget recommendations last week, lawmakers will now have to decide if they want to allocate funds for a possible expansion of Madison's Alliant Energy Center. On Wednesday, the committee failed to approve any of the governor's projects, which total $2.5 billion. All four Republican members of the panel voted against each of the 82 items, while the four Democrats voted yes.

The bulk of Evers' project list included upgrades to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and Camp Randall Stadium, as well as major construction on the Alliant Energy Exhibition Hall.

As Wisconsin Ag Connection reported earlier, plans call for the facility to undergo a 196,000 square-foot addition to the exposition hall at a cost of $77.4 million. The governor's budget included $30 million of those funds. The remainder would come from a non-state grant program that provides state bonding support for non-profit or local government projects that have a statewide public purpose.

The Alliant Energy Center serves as home to many state and regional agricultural events, such as World Dairy Expo and the Midwest Horse Fair.

Dane County Board Chairwoman Sharon Corrigan said she hopes the legislature sees the value of the project, not only for the Madison area but for the entire state.

It's been nearly 50 years since the building commission last failed to forward a recommended list of projects to the legislative budget committee.
