Use of Drones Discussed at Public Hearing
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 03/27/2015

State lawmakers are in the process of weighing their options on the legality of using drones for various practices in Wisconsin. On Wednesday, the Assembly Committee on Jobs and the Economy held a public hearing on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Chairman Adam Neylon of Pewaukee said the state is an ideal place to embrace drones, with agricultural applications being among the reasons why they could be beneficial.

The Federal Aviation Administration is currently granting broader permission to use the devices on a case by case basis, but prohibits personal use of the machines if they are capable of audio and video recording in areas where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

The Associated Press reports that the FAA will grant blanket flying permission to applicants with drones that weigh less than 55 pounds and agree to fly at heights of less than 200 feet, to fly only in daytime, and to keep it away from airports.

Each state has the ability to regulate drone use within its borders.
