Rep. Ryan Introduces Trade Promotion Authority in Committee
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/17/2015
Farm and industry groups are praising Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan for introducing Trade Promotion Authority legislation to the House Ways & Means Committee. The Janesville Republican made the move Thursday, which is the same day that Senators Orrin Hatch and Ron Wyden brought the bill up in the
Senate's Finance Committee.
The TPA would provide a crucial step toward the passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The promotion authority, often called the 'fast track' for trade bills, would clear the way for the trade agreement to be introduced to Congress for a simple up or down vote, without the option for amendments.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told Wisconsin Ag Connection last week that Congress must act on the policy first before the Obama administration can negotiate trade deals with other countries within the TPP.
Meanwhile, American Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman says the growth of U.S. agriculture depends on our ability to compete in the international marketplace.
"This bipartisan effort advances an important policy objective just as the administration is engaged in major trade talks such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership," Stallman said. "The world's leader in agricultural exports, the United States has much to gain through congressional approval of TPA. [We are] coming off a record year of $152 billion in agricultural exports. TPA will help keep that trend moving forward."
The Trans-Pacific Partnership includes 12 countries, from Vietnam to New Zealand.
