State Vet Bans Poultry Movement in Areas Affected by H5N2
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/20/2015

Now that the H5N2 avian influenza virus has been confirmed in multiple poultry operations in Wisconsin, the state's veterinarian has issued a ban on poultry movement in those affected areas. On Friday, Dr. Paul McGraw said poultry in Jefferson, Juneau and Barron Counties are now prohibited from being transported to shows, exhibitions or swap meets until further notice.

"We are taking the necessary precautions to limit the spread of avian influenza throughout the state of Wisconsin," Dr. McGraw said. "Gathering poultry together increases the chances of exposure to the virus. Returning the same poultry to their home farms increases the likelihood of spreading the disease."

Wisconsin has three confirmed cases of avian influenza in the state since the virus was first found in the Midwest last month. Multiple outbreaks of the virus have occurred most recently in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, the Dakotas and Kansas leading to the depopulation of more than 1.5 million turkeys and chickens.

The state's animal health department says commercial poultry producers, backyard flock owners and poultry exhibitioners are encouraged to use proper biosecurity methods.
