Spring Planting Progress Finally in Full Swing
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/26/2016

Warm and sunny weather meant farmers had tremendous opportunity last week to work in the fields with little or no interruption. Monday's crop/weather summary from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted that some fields in the northern part of the state were still too muddy. But other regions saw great progress, with tillage and planting well underway.

Topsoil moisture levels declined from the previous week at one percent very short, seven percent short, 71 percent adequate and 21 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was four percent short, 78 percent adequate and 18 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, spring tillage was 37 percent complete statewide. That's about four days ahead of last year and 12 days ahead of the five-year average.

About 10 percent of the corn is now in the ground, just a few days ahead of average. Oats planting was reported as 37 percent complete, one day behind 2015, but five days ahead of the five-year average. Four percent of that crop has already emerged. And 30 percent of the potato crop was planted, just two days behind last year.

Winter wheat was rated 82 percent in good to excellent condition statewide.
