Avian Flu Strikes Third Barron County Turkey Operation
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/29/2015

Another detection of the H5 avian influenza has been confirmed in a 108,000 bird turkey flock in Barron County. The case is Wisconsin's seventh confirmed outbreak of the flu and the third in Barron County.

As with the other cases, state animal health experts are investigating how the virus entered the flock. While lethal to domestic poultry, the strain of virus detected is not known to have caused disease in humans and is not expected to pose a risk to public health or the food supply.

The state's agriculture department says the property was immediately quarantined and neighboring farms with poultry will be notified about the situation.

Following USDA protocols, surveillance and testing procedures will take place at properties near the affected facility to ensure the virus has not spread.
