State's Farm-Paid Milk Price Hits Six Year Low in March

Wisconsin farmers received an average price of $15.80 per hundredweight for their milk in March. That was 30-cents below the previous month and $1.80 lower than last March's price, according to the USDA latest Agricultural Prices report. This is the lowest monthly milk price since July 2010 when the price was $15.20 per cwt.

The U.S. milk price for March was $15.30 per cwt, 50-cents lower than Wisconsin's price and 40-cents lower than the February U.S. price. Twenty-one of the 23 major milk producing states had a decrease in price from February to March, while New Mexico and Texas had no change in price. Pennsylvania had the greatest decrease in price, down 80 cents to $16.30 per cwt.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange 40-pound block cheese price closed at $1.37 per pound on April 29, while barrels were $1.41 per pound. The CME butter price was $2.12 per pound.

For the week ending April 23, the Agricultural Marketing Service U.S. weekly 40-pound block cheese price averaged $1.47 per pound, and 500 pound barrels adjusted to 38 percent moisture averaged $1.47 per pound. The U.S. butter price was $2.08 per pound.
