May is the New Beef Month in Wisconsin

The state's beef check-off program is bumping up its annual Wisconsin Beef Month up to May this year instead of July. Angela Horkan from the Wisconsin Beef Council says the change was made to help promote meat products to coincide with the start of the summer grilling season.

"After decades of helping celebrate beef during the middle of the summer, the Council has made the move to kick grilling season off right, celebrating a product that is responsible for more than 35,000 jobs and $2.1 billion in total income to the state," Horkan said.

Horkan adds that every $100 of income generated by beef farms in the state provides an additional $117 of income elsewhere in Wisconsin's economy. And she says the industry is currently experiencing growth compared to other states.

"In the past 10 years, Wisconsin is only one of 10 states that have increased beef cow numbers and it had the second largest growth behind Oklahoma," she stated.

Much of the state's beef cow herd is located in western and southwestern portions of the state. Grant County, the state's top beef cow county, has nearly a tenth of the state's beef cows, according to the WBC.

Meanwhile, the state's beef checkoff helps local producers by providing an avenue to promote their products to a very large consumer base.
