Still Going: State Milk Output Rises 36 Months in a Row!
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/22/2017

Wisconsin dairy farmers have now seen three full years of consecutive monthly increases in milk production compared to year-ago levels (1). According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, the Dairy State produced 2.53 billion pounds of milk last month, up a slight 0.6 percent from April 2016, but lower than March's 2.59 billion pounds (which had more days on the calendar).

Nationally, a record 17.2 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states for the month of April, which was up two percent higher than in 2015, but less than the previous month's 17.5 billion.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.44 billion pounds, despite being one of just five states with lower annual output. Texas had the greatest increase in year-to-year production as that state produced 1.02 billion pounds of milk in April, up 12.8 percent from the same month last year.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.72 million head, 81,000 head more than April 2016, and 8,000 greater than March 2017. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head, about 1,000 more than last year, but unchanged fro the previous month. Production per cow averaged 1,975 pounds, up 10 pounds from a year ago.

(1.) Wisconsin Ag Connection acknowledges that February 2017 milk production was lower than the previous year because of Leap Day, but when daily averages were factored in, output was actually more in February 2017.
