Shiloh Dairies Named Wisconsin Family Business of the Year
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/20/2016

A Calumet County dairy operation has been honored as one of the 2016 Wisconsin Family Businesses of the Year. Shiloh Dairies of Brillion, owned by Gordon & Cathy Speirs and sons, earned the distinction in the Small Company category during a banquet in Madison this week.

The Speirs moved their farm to Wisconsin from Canada in 2003. Gordon's grandfather began the small dairy in Saskatchewan in the 1930s, but over the years, the farm moved twice in hopes of growing into a more profitable enterprise.

Shiloh Farms currently milks 2,100 cows and raises all of their young stock on-site.

"It was always important for us to get our kids involved in farming," Gordon said. "It is our way of life, and no matter what they would go on to do as adults, we knew that we wanted to teach them responsibility and show them the rewards of growing up and working on a dairy farm."

Gordon is the farm's general manager and also serves as president of the Dairy Business Association. Cathy oversees the maternity program and handles the herd's genetics. Their sons, Travis and Tyler, have management roles in running the farm, as well.

Other businesses honored this week include Empire Screen Printing of Onalaska in the Large Company category, and Badger Basement Systems, Fort Atkinson, in the Medium category.

The award program is sponsored by Smith & Gesteland, a CPA firm, First Business Bank, and the Whyte, Hirschboeck, Dudek law firm.
