State Fair Workers to Lose Pay Raises After Frenette's Firing
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/24/2016

Employees of Wisconsin State Fair Park in Milwaukee who were given raises by former CEO Rick Frenette are having their pay hikes rescinded. Chairman John Yingling said that 30 staff members were notified on Monday that their compensation increases are being rolled back because Frenette issued them without using proper protocol. The workers will, however, be able to keep the extra money they earned between January and May without paying those funds back.

Frenette was dismissed by the State Fair Park Board on May 11 after heading the facility's finances and operations since 2010. Human Resources Director Ryan Burns also stepped down that week because of the issue. Both Frenette and Burns were among the individuals who were getting pay raises without the authorization of the Department of Administration.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says an open records request shows the wage increases totaled about $78,000.

Meanwhile, board members have announced they will likely hire a permanent replacement for Frenette after this year's state fair, which takes place August 4-14. Until then, Kathleen O'Leary, a longtime State Fair employee, will handle those responsibilities on an interim basis.
