Nilsestuen Calls on Industry to Get Involved in Ag Ed Workforce Council
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/30/2008

Wisconsin's agriculture secretary is calling on the private industry to nominate members for the state's first Agricultural Education and Workforce Development Council. Rod Nilsestuen says the purpose of the 34-member group is to ensure the state will have farmers, agricultural workers and entrepreneurs needed to grow the industry in the future.

"By drawing on the diverse talents and perspectives of leaders from across the state, we must find ways to attract the best talent with the right preparation to the agricultural sector," said Secretary Nilsestuen.

Population studies warn of projected shortfalls in human resources needed to fuel Wisconsin's agricultural sector. Rural areas are aging and the numbers of young people declining. Projections show that in 65 of Wisconsin's 72 counties, school age student populations will continue to decline steadily for the next ten years. The shortfall is expected to impact the number of young people going into farm-related careers.

In April, Governor Jim Doyle signed a bill into law, which establishes the Wisconsin Agricultural Education and Workforce Development Council. The act also authorizes the creation of one full-time position at DATCP to serve as executive director of the council. Responsibilities of the council range from increasing the hiring and retention of well-qualified employees to promoting education for careers in agriculture, food and natural resources. The council will track educational programs, help coordinate efforts from kindergarten to post-secondary education and beyond, and advocate for agricultural and workforce development education.
