Wisconsin Maple Syrup Output Rose from 2017

The prolonged winter season was good for one thing this year: maple syrup production. According to the latest figures from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, maple producers cooked 225,000 gallons of syrup this spring, up 25,000 gallons from 2017.

The number of taps also increased by 15,000 this year to 750,000. Newly released figures show that yield was 0.300 gallons per tap, above the 0.272 gallons per tap a season earlier.

Last year, the average price Wisconsin maple producers received was $31.40 per gallon, down $2.10 from a year ago.

The 2018 Wisconsin maple syrup season began on February 18--12 days later than in 2017. The season ended on May 2, which is three days past last year's final day.

Wisconsin ranks fourth nationally for maple syrup production, only trailing Vermont, New York and Maine.
