State & National Milk Output Still Climbing

The USDA announced that total milk production for the 23 major dairy states rose by another 2.1 percent last month compared to 2011 at 16.4 billion pounds, and was three percent higher than the month earlier.
Wisconsin produced 2.33 billion pounds of milk in May--up 2.4 percent above last year, and much more than April's 2.26 billion pounds. California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.74 billion pounds. Utah had the highest percent-increase for the month as that state put out 8.3 percent
more milk than last year at 170 million pounds.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.52 million head, 77,000 head more than May 2011, but 3,000 head less than April 2012. Wisconsin was milking about 1.27 million head of dairy cattle during the month, with total production averaging 1,840 pounds per cow for the
month, which was about 35 pounds more than last year's average for May. The national per-cow average was up 22 pound at 1,924 pounds per animal.
