New Aquaculture Bill Signed into Law
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/26/2017

The state will soon be scaling back on certain regulations it imposes on Wisconsin fish farmers. The so-called aquaculture bill was signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker last week. The measure aims to reduce burdensome and inconsistent regulations within Wisconsin's fish farming industry.

Rep. Mary Felzkowski sponsored the legislation, which she says will allow access to appropriate genetic strains of fish and fish eggs to strengthen a successful public-private partnership between private fish farms and state fish hatcheries. The Irma Republican says her measure also reduces the number of permits needed to build or repair fish farm facilities.

Supporters say the new law would further help to alleviate a supply issue. Wisconsin currently has a substantial deficit in the amount of fish and seafood that is provided from local fisheries compared to what is consumed.

Meanwhile, the governor also signed a bill that would allow small gas stations to price their fuel by the half-gallon. That measure is designed to accommodate stations with non-digital pumps that don't go beyond $1.99 or $2.99.
