Another Hot Week for Wisconsin Crops
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/28/2016

Another hot and stormy weekend has aided in major crop development during the past week. But the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted in Monday's weekly crop report that scattered storm damage was reported, including lodging in small grains and ponding in some fields. Fortunately, there were enough dry days during the week to wrap-up the first crop of hay and continue harvesting the second crop.

Topsoil moisture levels are now rated nine percent short, 80 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, reports said the statewide corn crop condition was 86 percent good to excellent. Six percent of the state's expected soybean acres were also blooming, which is ahead of average. Some farmers said weed control was needed in soybean fields due to delayed spraying.

Oats were 69 percent headed, one day behind last year, but five days ahead of the average. About 80 percent of oats were coloring, the same as last year. Winter wheat was 97 percent headed; and was 57 percent coloring.

And the first cutting of alfalfa was 97 percent complete, while 36 percent of the second crop is now off the fields.
