WAGA to Hold Apple Field Day in Richland Center
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/03/2012
The Wisconsin Apple Growers Association is inviting growers to its annual Apple Field Day next week near Richland Center. The event, which is being co-sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Extension service, will be held at Oakwood Fruit Farm on July 10, starting at 9:30 a.m.
Organizers say growers from across Wisconsin and nearby states will come together to discuss issues affecting apple production including weather related issues being faced this year.
Some of the topics being covered at the field day include rootstocks and high density plantings, disease and insect control and affective marketing. There will also be spraying demonstrations.
The Oakwood Fruit Farm is family owned and operated by the Louis family. The soils on the property are fertile and the topography allows cold air to drain from the ridges where trees are planted.
They have over 20 apple cultivars ripening from early August through October, along with cider apples and grapes. Much of the fruit is sold retail through the farm market, but a wholesale division of the company moves a significant amount of fruit as well as custom packing fruit for other local growers.
The cost to attend the field day is $25 per person for WAGA members and $37 for non-members. Lunch is included.
