Extension, DNR to Hold Workshops on CAFO Expansion
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 01/24/2022

The University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are teaming up to hold a series of four online workshops for those considering expanding their farms. The virtual sessions will be held February 15-16 for livestock producers, their employees and agronomic and engineering consultants.

Designed for producers with Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation permits and those considering expansion to CAFO-permit size, the workshops will focus on the following themes: nutrient management, engineering, regulatory updates and groundwater.

Each day will feature a morning session from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and an afternoon program from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The morning session on February 15 will focus on nutrient management and feature discussions on NR 243; reducing soil compaction from manure application; and the effects of diet on manure, methane and carbon. Afternoon presentations will focus on engineering topics with sessions on the permit implications of manure digester modifications, biogas/carbon credits, long-distance manure pipelines and under road crossings.

The morning session on February 16 will focus on regulatory updates related to NR 151, groundwater monitoring, ePermitting and reporting forms. The afternoon session on groundwater will feature discussions on Silurian bedrock, subsurface setbacks and groundwater monitoring.

Registration is $15 for one session or $25 for the entire series if registered by February 10. Beginning February 11, registrants will pay an additional $20 late fee.
