Machinery Pete Shares the Power of Personal Stories

The most trusted name in farm equipment has a message for people who want to get better prices when they sell tractors and other iron machines: tell the story behind the item and be authentic. That's according to Greg Peterson of Farm Journal Media, who gave a presentation at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Thursday on the trends in the used ag equipment sector.

Known as 'Machinery Pete,' Peterson said buyers love knowing personal facts about the items they are bidding on at auctions.

"When you personalize it, it makes it worth more," Peterson said. "When farm equipment is in good condition and if it means something to someone, it will always bring a better price."

Peterson has been tracking auction prices on tractors and other implements for nearly 30 years. He said the slightly-used equipment with low-hours continues to be the hot sellers at auctions and equipment dealerships across the country.

"Even in this tough ag market, a lot of people would have thought that prices would be off a bit on this kind of machinery, but in fact it's just the opposite," he noted. "If the used equipment is in good condition, the prices are going for decent money. Stuff that's a little more weathered is not selling as good right now."

He also observed that tariff spats and trade wars are not suppressing the market as of yet--especially on tractors that are three- to-seven years of age.

Machinery Pete adds that combine prices are also going for high dollars on the auction block, along with tractors just under 100 horse power.
