Attendance Down for 2012 Farm Tech Days
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/20/2012

Final attendance numbers for this year's Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Outagamie County took a hit from the various weather conditions this week. As the show was wrapping up on Thursday afternoon, Outagamie County Extension Agent Kevin Jarek told Wisconsin Ag Connection that organizers did the best they could with what they had to work with.

"It goes without saying that everyone who gave the last three and a half years of their lives to organize this event were disappointed that Mother Nature interfered in one form or another during each day of the show," he said. "But it was so great to see how understanding and cooperative the attendees and the exhibitors were despite that fact."

On day-three, a light drizzle fell on the grounds throughout the day, which drove attendance down some from the day before. Jarek says final attendance numbers are expected to be released in the coming days, but he estimates that about 35,500 people came through the gates at Sugar Creek Farms and Heideman Farms this week.

Jarek adds that the host family has decided to clear the grounds immediately and made an emergency decision this week to till tent city up and plant a late sorghum crop because drought conditions are likely to leave them with a lack of quality feed.

Meanwhile, the task of hosting the event will be passed on to Breezy Hill Dairy, owned by the Alex and Mary Olson Family near Dallas, just south of Rice Lake. Their show will be held July 9-11, 2013 in Barron County. Portage County will be the host in August 2014 at Blue Top Farms near Plover. And Dane County is in the process of finding a host family for the 2015 show.

The expo is run by Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, Inc.--a group comprised of representatives of state and federal agencies involved in agriculture and natural resources, the University of Wisconsin, and the agribusiness-industry and farming sectors.
