Most Wisconsin Crops Looking Good to Excellent
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/26/2016

The right combination of heat and moisture is what it takes to grow great crops and that's exactly what the state is getting this summer. The latest crop/weather summary noted that highs were in the upper 80s and 90s last week, mixed with occasional thundershowers. But the humidity did make it difficult to make hay.

Reporters say abundant soil moisture helped to support pollination and limit heat stress. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated six percent short, 84 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus last week.

As of Sunday, about 64 percent of the state's corn acreage had reached the silking stage. That's four days ahead of last year, and six days ahead of the five-year average. Corn condition was 86 percent good to excellent.

Eighty-six percent of the soybeans were at or beyond the blooming stage, 13 days ahead of last year, and 15 days ahead of the average. About 44 percent of the beans had begun setting pods, which is also ahead of normal. Soybean condition was 86 percent good to excellent.

Oats were 87 percent coloring or beyond, which has allowed farmers to harvest 17 percent of the crop. Another 45 percent of the winter wheat crop had also been harvested.

And the second cutting of alfalfa was 92 percent complete, with third crop now about 31 percent harvested.
