Marathon, Iowa Counties Top State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest

A team from Marathon County took top honors in the senior division of the State 4-H Livestock Contest at the Arlington Public Events Center this week. The event consisted of evaluating classes of market and breeding beef, market and breeding swine, market and breeding sheep and boer goats, as well as answer questions and deliver reasons.

Winning team members were Dathan Smerchek, Kelsi Smerchek, Jared Radcliffe and Katelyn Schmoll. They are coached by Dan Smerchek. The students will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest later this fall in Louisville, Kentucky. The second place senior team was Iowa County. Team members included Megan Thomas, Jacob Yelinek, Reid Suddeth and Erica Thomas. Jeff Thomas was the coach of that group. Grant County placed third in the event, with Jefferson County finishing fourth.

The top ten senior individual judges of the contest were Andrea Patterson, Grant; Dathan Smerchek, Marathon; Kelsi Smerchek, Marathon; Sarah Lillesand, Sheboygan; Brooke Roberts, Manitowoc; Jacob Yelinek, Iowa; Jared Radcliffe, Marathon; Katelyn Schmoll, Marathon; Emily Petzel, Polk; and Micaela Wilharm, Jefferson. The top reasons team was Marathon County.

Meanwhile, the top junior team of the event was from Iowa County. Team members were Brittany Rhyner, Morgan Fitzsimmons, Haley Yelinek, Paige Gaffney and coached by Jeff Thomas. A second team of students from the same county finished in second place, with Manitowoc County finishing in third.
