Milk Prices Rose a Bit During 'Dairy Month'

Wisconsin farmers received an average price of $17.90 per hundredweight for their milk in June 2015. This was 20 cents more than the price received in May, but $5.30 lower than last June.

The U.S. milk price for June was $16.90 per cwt, $1.00 lower than Wisconsin's price but 20 cents higher than the May U.S. price. Fifteen of the 23 major milk producing states had an increase in price from May to June, three had a price decrease, and five had no change in price. California and Virginia had the largest price increases, up 60 cents from May. New Mexico, on the other hand, had the greatest price decrease, down 40 cents to $15.60 per cwt.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange 40-pound block cheese price closed at $1.74 per pound on July 30, while barrels were $1.71 per pound. The CME butter price was $1.95 per pound.

For the week ending July 25, the Agricultural Marketing Service U.S. weekly 40-pound block cheese price averaged $1.67 per pound, and 500 pound barrels adjusted to 38 percent moisture averaged $1.66 per pound.

The U.S. butter price was $1.8930 per pound.
