Whispering Pines to Present Christmas Tree to the White House
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/03/2015

Oconto Christmas tree grower Dave Vander Velden has had the honor of winning the Wisconsin Christmas Tree Association's annual tree competition several times in the past. But now the owner of Whispering Pines Tree Farm has been selected as a winner of the national contest, which means he gets to present one of the official White House Christmas trees this fall to First Lady Michelle Obama.

Last week, Vander Velden's balsam fir entry was selected as co-champion at the National Christmas Tree Growers Convention in Illinois. The other winning tree of the national competition was from Pennsylvania.

Now that Vander Velden has earned the top spot at nationals, officials from the White House will visit his farm later this fall and select an 18-foot pine to be displayed in the Blue Room during the upcoming holiday season.

The Vander Veldens have been growing trees for about 30 years. They currently grow several species on approximately 150 acres.

Entries from Whispering Pines earned top honors at the Wisconsin Christmas Tree statewide contest in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

This is the eighth time in the past 50 years that a tree from Wisconsin has been chosen as the national winner.
