Rep. Petryk Encourages Farmers to Sell Products Locally
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/15/2018

State Rep. Warren Petryk is urging farmers and others to apply for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture's Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin program, which encourages producers to sell their food locally.

"Supporting our Wisconsin farmers is a top priority for me," Petryk said. "As a member of the Assembly Rural Wisconsin Initiative, I consistently hear from farmers concerned about current low prices for agricultural commodities and uncertainty about international markets for their products. With the Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin program, farmers and others in our agricultural industries can tap into markets right here in Wisconsin."

A total of $200,000 is available in grant funding; the maximum award for each project is $50,000. Grant applicants must provide a cash or in-kind match of at least 50 percent of the total project budget.

Each proposal must include a cover page, a completed budget template and three-page project description. Applications must be received by September 14, with winners being announced in December.

Over the last decade, 58 projects totaling more than $1.6 million have been funded. That resulted in nearly $10 million in new local food sales, created 211 jobs, and helped more than 2,700 producers and 2,900 markets.

For more information, call the Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin program at DATCP at 608-224-5112. Grant proposals are due September 14.
